Bat Survey in Aylesbury

When undertaking a Bat Survey in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, you never know what may surprise you.

We have been working with the guys over at HollandGreen on several projects, and once again one of their projects held a special surprise, much like our Maidenhead bat surveys with them.

HollandGreen has a team of talented architects, technicians and interiors experts.

They operate from three studios, in Thame, Hampton and the Cotswolds, Covering Maidenhead, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, the Cotswolds, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and London.

Bat Roost Assessment

During the Preliminary Roost Assessment undertaken in 2019, The house offered a few opportunities for bats to roost.

However, to our surprise a huge pile of bat droppings were found within an inside kitchen cupboard. Furthermore, a gaps between the fascia boarding and slipped tiles through out the roof confirmed that bat surveys would be required.

Due to the amount of dropping, which were small and tapered at the ends, meaning they were most likely a pipistrelle species, we felt a maternity roost was likely. This meant we had to wait until Summer 2020 before proceeding.

Aylesbury Bat Activity Surveys

Based on the evidence, additional bat surveys were booked.

In May 2020 we arrived for another scout of the building for any changes and undertook dusk and dawn activity survey. The activity was minimal with just a few bats passing the area and nothing seemingly using the house as a roost.

How things can change!

Our team returned to the building 21 days later to undertake the second round of bat survey.

Yet, despite it being a rather quiet survey on the first visit 30+ Soprano Pipistrelle emerged from an adjective barn on the site at around 20 minutes before sunset.

Yes! We had a maternity roost of Soprano Pipistrelle, just not in the building we were surveying.

Well that was until around 15 minutes later the first of over 100 Common Pipistrelle, emerged from a tiny hole in the oak beams on the gable.

We rose from our short sleep in the ‘Bat Mobile’ early to set up infrared video equipment to record the dawn survey and re-entry to the roost. As you can see from the video above the swarming of bats before going back to bed did not disappoint.

The Final Bat Survey in Buckinghamshire

The bat survey in Aylesbury process is still underway as we continue to monitor the roost regular. We’ll update this article in due course.

Bat Mitigation Aylesbury

The final steps for this project will be continued monitoring of the site. We will also work with the architect to design the perfect environment to retain the bat roost. Going of the superb work undertaken on mitigation design from Laira in previous projects we can not wait to see what we can develop for our Aylesbury client.

Furthermore, Chase Ecology will design a mitigation strategy.

Finally, we’ll apply for a mitigation licence with Natural England.

DID YOU KNOW?

We're one of the very few ecology companies in the UK that hold a Bat Low Impact Licence with Natural England. This means that on average we are 60 days faster than others in securing your mitigation documents to ensure you have no delays in starting your development.
